The Multibeam Training Workshop, organized and hosted by the Brazilian Naval Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation (DHN) was also supported by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). It was a five-day event in Niterói, Brazil, November 17-21, 2008 and included attendees from the region's national hydrographic authorities.
The first day was devoted to lectures by Dr. John Hughes Clarke of the Ocean Mapping Group, University of New Brunswick and Michael Lamplugh of the Canadian Hydrographic Service on multibeam principles and survey planning. During the morning of the second day lectures were presented from Aluizio Oliveira Jr. of DHN on the new IHO-S44 standards. Also featured were presentations from Elliot Arroyo-Suarez of US Naval Oceanographic Office on the 3D positioning concept and the implementation of an expeditionary multibeam kit to conduct military reconnaissance surveys. Afternoon presentations were by selected industry-leading companies included Caris, Kongsberg, SightGPS/ Reson, ODIM Brooke Ocean, L-3 Klein, Edgetech, and IVS 3D.
Lindsay Gee attended the training workshop, and was supported by the local representative Threetek Soluções em Geomática Ltda. He presented "The Use of Fledermaus for Multibeam Processing, QC, and Hydrography", as well as several short workshops.
The workshops focused on the benefits of the Fledermaus hybrid CUBE approach to hydrographic processing, quality control, and analysis. Mr. Gee commented, "It was a pleasure to be invited to attend this workshop, which was a great follow-up to the workshops previously hosted by the US Naval Oceanographic Office in Mississippi and Columbia. It was also a great opportunity to spend time with our local agents, Threetek Soluções em Geomática, and bring them up to date with the latest Fledermaus developments and plans. Many organizations in Central and South America have been working hard to improve their hydrographic tool kits for various reasons, whether for general nautical charting or as part of UNCLOS; the Brazilian offshore industry is also quite busy. All of this has brought forth an increased demand for Fledermaus in those regions, and as a result we are developing a strong user base, and we are pleased to have the representation of Threetek Soluções em Geomática."
The attendees also included local participants invited by DHN from other government departments, companies and universities in Brazil. IVS 3D co-hosted a dinner with Konsberg Maritime for participants visiting from neighboring South American countries.

Plans are underway in 2009 to host a regional Fledermaus workshop in Brazil to be coordinated by Threetek Soluções em Geomática.
